ORPHAN PROGRAM

I grew up in a family where my mother supported both relatives and non-relatives, most of the latter being orphans.

I always dreamt that one day I too, would take care of less privileged children. I would give them an excellent education, help them become independent, and show them how to be responsible and productive members of the community.

On the 31st of January 2012, my dream came true. On that day, my husband Khalifa and two businesswomen, Ms. Aysharose Mattembe and Ms. Muna Mohammed, joined together to establish The British School of Zanzibar. We initially started with only 3 children, one of them being an orphan named Maimuna Makungu, and by the grace of God, the school grew into something I never could’ve foreseen.

With the support of donations from a tourist friend—Mr. Charles Murray from Scotland—we soon managed to add another orphan, Nuru Haji. Over the years, this program grew, and thanks to the support of many, we have five orphans currently at our school. BSZ now has over 75 students, with almost 10% of them being orphans or coming from less privileged students. The students currently in this program are:

No Name Age Class
1 Sauda Kombo Mohammed 11 5
2 Mutawakal Abdallah Abdurahman 9 3
3 Mariam Mustafa Othman 7 2
4 Idarous Juma Mzee 6 1

Vision and Mission Statement

Spread hope, love and reason into the lives of orphaned and less privileged children. With support from donors like you, we aim to reach as many orphaned and less privileged children as possible. Our goal right now is 20% of student enrolment, and that can only be achieved by supplemental assistance.

We aim to create lasting partnerships between individuals and businesses to raise funds and implement sustainable programs to release orphaned and less privileged children from social, economical, and physical poverty and enable them to become responsible and productive citizens.
